Write with JP Infante: “Which Genre?”
April 27, 2019 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Should you be telling your story as fiction, nonfiction or poetry?
What’s the difference?
Does your writing style fit one genre better than another?
In this workshop we will read and write fiction, nonfiction and poetry.
We will determine how understanding the rules and expectations of genre can help us tell and sell our stories.
A lot of us write free verse poetry– what some call “modern poetry”– because of the freedom. There are no rules. We don’t have to adhere to structure, punctuation or grammar. What if that average poem you wrote would make for a emotionally charged short story?
Sometimes we decide to write a short story, a story that’s great when you tell it to friends, but doesn’t have the same impact when they read the written version. What if that story is really a moment, maybe a poem?
As writers, we put a lot of thought into what we want to express, but how much thought are we putting into the genre we choose?
In “Which Genre?” we will discuss poetry, prose as they are defined by writers, the marketplace and the way each is experienced by readers. This analysis will inform the three short pieces we will write in class.
Final Work Product: Three short pieces, each in different genres.
